Houston Astros' Justin Verlander Makes Baseball History in Re-Debut with Organization on Saturday
The Houston Astros lost to the New York Yankees on Saturday afternoon by a score of 3-1.
Though he was dealt the loss, Astros legend Justin Verlander had a memorable start of his second tenure with the organization.
Traded to Houston from the New York Mets earlier this week, Verlander went seven innings, surrendering just two runs on seven hits. He walked two and struck out four. He fell to 6-6 on the year and lowered his ERA to 3.11.
He also made baseball history, accomplishing the latest accolade in his storied career.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
The @astros' Justin Verlander now has a 0.84 career WHIP with Houston, the lowest by any pitcher with a single team in MLB history (min. 100 starts).
Verlander has been excellent everywhere he's been (DET, HOU and NYM) but he's been especially good with Houston since arriving in 2017 in a trade from the Tigers. He helped the Astros win the World Series in both 2017 and 2022 before signing with the Mets this offseason and is trying to help the Astros win again in 2023.
One of the most accomplished pitchers in baseball history, Verlander has 250 wins in his career, has won three Cy Young awards, two ERA titles and is a nine-time All-Star.
After the loss, the Astros are 63-49 this season. They trail the Texas Rangers by 2.0 games in the American League West and currently own the second wild card spot in the AL.
The Astros and Yankees will play again on Sunday at 1:35 p.m. ET.
