Los Angeles Angels Do Something They Haven't Done in More Than a Decade in Blowout Loss to Tampa Bay Rays
The Los Angeles Angels split a doubleheader with the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, winning the first game 7-6 before losing the second game 18-4.
The two teams played a doubleheader because of schedule restructuring due to impending Hurricane Hilary.
The Angels' loss made some unfortunate team history and continued their second-half swoon.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
The Angels lose 18-4 in Game 2 of the doubleheader vs the Rays.
The 14-run loss is their largest loss at home since May 25, 2009. (also 14)
After going all-in to try to make the playoffs for the first time since 2014, the Halos are now 61-64 and 8.0 games back in the American League wild card race.
At the trade deadline, the team acquired pitchers Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez, as well as CJ Cron and Randal Grichuk, but the moves haven't resulted in an uptick in performance.
Not only does the fall from playoff contention hurt the Angels this year, it could hurt their future attempts to re-sign Shohei Ohtani in the offseason. The two-way star has said he wants to play for a winner, and yet again, the Angels aren't one.
The Angels will be off on Sunday as a result of the reschedules but will host the Cincinnati Reds in a new series beginning on Monday.
The Reds are also vying for a playoff spot this season and enter play on Sunday at 64-60.
The hope is that Angels star Mike Trout can return from a broken hamate bone in time for that game.
