Los Angeles Dodgers' Mookie Betts Extends Own Lead in Baseball History
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Kansas City Royals on Friday night by a score of 9-3. With the win, the Dodgers moved to 46-35 while the loss dropped the Royals to 23-59.
The Dodgers offensive output was fueled by star leadoff hitter Mookie Betts. Betts went 4-4 on the night with two home runs, four RBI, three runs scored and two walks.
With the two home runs, he also extended his own personal lead in baseball history.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com on Twitter:
most career multi-home run games out of leadoff spot:
Mookie Betts: 23
George Springer: 19
Alfonso Soriano: 19
Brady Anderson: 14
Kyle Schwarber: 13
Joc Pederson: 13
Bobby Bonds: 13
With the outburst, Betts is hitting .270 this year with 22 homers and 55 RBI. He's also stolen seven bases. His multi-home run effort is ironic considering that just hours earlier on Friday he confirmed his participation in the Home Run Derby at All-Star week.
In addition to the Derby, Betts also was named a starter for the All-Star Game. This gives him seven appearances in his career. One of the best players of his generation, he also is a five-time Silver Slugger Award winner, a six-time Gold Glover, a two-time World Series champion (2018, 2020) and a batting champion.
He signed a 12-year contract with the Dodgers after being acquired by them before the 2020 season in a trade with the Red Sox.
The Dodgers and Royals will play again on Saturday night at 7:15 p.m. ET.
