Los Angeles Dodgers Superstar Mookie Betts Launches History-Making Grand Slam
Los Angeles Dodgers second baseman Mookie Betts jacked a grand slam deep to left-center field against the San Diego Padres on Monday afternoon, making some history along the way.
Betts was hitting out of the leadoff spot in the game, making the home run his fifth-ever grand slam from that place in the lineup. According to ESPN Stats & Info, Betts is now tied for the most career grand slams out of the leadoff spot in MLB history.
The other players joining Betts at the top of that list are Jose Altuve, Curtis Granderson, Brian Roberts, Marcus Semien and George Springer, per MLB.com's Sarah Langs.
The former MVP and two-time World Series champion finished the day 1-for-5 at the plate with two strikeouts, but his four RBI in the fourth inning helped Los Angeles build enough of a cushion to comfortably beat San Diego 13-7 and complete the 3-1 series victory.
Every one of the Dodgers' starters had at least one hit, while four had two or more.
Betts is now up to 31 home runs on the season through just 106 games, only coming in behind Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson on the NL leaderboards. The 30-year-old is hitting .284 with a .966 OPS, and he is expected to be right in the thick of the NL MVP conversation once again this fall.
Accord to DraftKings Sportsbook, Betts has the third-best odds to win the award at plus-4500.
Betts has hit four home runs in his last seven games, and he is on pace to end the season with 46.
The 5-foot-9 slugger will get another chance to add to his home run total against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday. First pitch from Phoenix is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET.
