Los Angeles Star Shohei Ohtani Joins....Himself Atop Team Home Run History
Stop me if you've heard this one before.
The Los Angeles Angels won a baseball game and Shohei Ohtani hit a home run.
It's a familiar script for Angels fans and it played out again on Sunday. The Halos beat the Kansas City Royals, 5-2, as Ohtani hit his league-leading 24th home run.
The 24 home runs are already the second-highest total for an Angels player through June, and we still have more than a week left in the month.
The Angels player with the most home runs ever through June? Ohtani, back in 2021.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Shohei Ohtani has 24 HR, the 2nd most by an Angels player all-time through June, and he's still got 10 more games this month. The only player with more?
Himself, in 2021 (28).
We've never seen anything Ohtani in the majors. At this point, it's as if he's breaking team or baseball history every single day.
At the plate, he's hitting .300 this season with the 24 homers and now 58 RBIs. He leads the league in both categories and owns an OPS of 1.016.
On the mound, he's one of the top pitchers in baseball, as well. He's 6-2 with a 3.29 ERA and has struck out 105 batters in 82.0 innings.
His play is a major reason why the Angels are 41-33 and now in second place in the American League West. They are 4.5 games behind the Texas Rangers.
The Halos will play the Los Angeles Dodgers beginning Tuesday at 10:07 p.m. ET.
