Atlanta Braves' Matt Olson Homers His Way into Exclusive All-Time Group on Thursday
Atlanta Braves first baseman Matt Olson hit his 40th home run of the season on Thursday afternoon, putting himself in an incredible group in baseball history - one littered with Hall of Famers.
Per Mark Bowman of MLB.com:
Players with 40 HRs and 100 RBIs through team's first 113 games: Matt Olson, Babe Ruth (4 times), Mickey Mantle (twice), Sammy Sosa (twice), Mark McGwire (twice), David Ortiz, Roger Maris, Aaron Judge, Hank Greenberg, Hack Wilson Luis Gonzalez, Jimmie Foxx and Chris Davis
Those are some of the all-time greats right there, which points to what a magical season Olson is having.
His 40 homers are already a career high, and we haven't even hit September yet. There's absolutely a chance that he gets to 50 or more by the end of the season.
He's got 101 RBIs this season and is hitting .268, which is above his lifetime average of .252. This is his second season in Atlanta after being acquired before the 2022 season. He had previously spent six years with the Oakland Athletics.
Atlanta entered play on Thursday as the best team in baseball at 72-40. With powerful offensive pieces like Olson, Ronald Acuna Jr., Ozzie Albies, Sean Murphy and Austin Riley, the Braves are one of the few teams that can win the World Series this season.
Atlanta also won the World Series in 2021.
The Braves lead the Pirates 4-3 at the time of this posting and will begin a new series on Friday with the New York Mets at Citi Field.
