Miami Marlins' Eury Perez Does Something Not Done in More Than 120 Years in Baseball History
After having Sandy Alcantara win the National League Cy Young award in 2022, the Miami Marlins might have a future Cy Young winner on the roster in rookie Eury Perez.
The 20-year-old former top prospect dominated once again on Sunday, tossing six scoreless innings against the Pittsburgh Pirates. He allowed just four hits, walked one and struck out nine.
He's also made some baseball history in the process, doing something that hasn't been done in more than 120 years of baseball history.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Eury Pérez is the youngest pitcher since at least 1901 with 3 straight scoreless outings of 6+ innings !!!
At the time of this posting, the Marlins lead the Pirates 2-0. If they are able to hold onto this lead, Perez would move to 5-1 with a 1.34 ERA. He's struck out 54 batters in 47.0 innings and has registered a WHIP of 0.98.
He made his major league debut on May 12 and has been a major reason why the Marlins have been able to put together such a successful season to this point. The Marlins are in position to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020 and currently own a National League Wild Card spot.
If they win this game, they'll move to 45-34 on the season. They'll be off on Monday before making a trip to Boston to open up a series with the Red Sox on Tuesday night.
First pitch is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. ET as Alcantara pitches against Garrett Whitlock.
