The Miami Marlins suffered a 4-2 loss on Monday night against the Philadelphia Phillies but that didn't stop Marlins hitting savant Luis Arraez from making some baseball history.

After going 3-for-4 in the loss, Arraez ended the month of July hitting .381 for the season.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Luis Arraez is hitting .381 (!) that’s the highest batting average for a qualified hitter entering August (excluding 2020) since Nomar Garciaparra in 2000 (.394)

It's been a great year for Arraez, who is trying to become the first player since Ted Williams (1941) to hit over .400 for a season. He's also trying to become the first player since 1900 to win the batting title in consecutive years in different leagues. He won the 2022 batting title with the Minnesota Twins.

Acquired from Minnesota this offseason for pitcher Pablo Lopez, Arraez has been the catalyst of the Marlins turnaround. Miami enters play on Tuesday at 57-50 overall. They are currently tied for the third and final wild card spot in the National League and are seeking their first playoff berth since 2020.

In addition to the batting average, Arraez has a career-high 51 RBI this season. He's got a .429 on-base percentage.

For his career, he's a .329 hitter with a .386 on-base percentage. He debuted in 2019.

The Marlins host the Phillies again on Tuesday night at loanDepot park.

First pitch is slated for 6:40 p.m. ET as Marlins righty Sandy Alcantara is opposed by Phillies left-hander Ranger Suarez.
