Miami Marlins starting pitcher Eury Perez didn't even make it out of the first inning in his last start against the Atlanta Braves, but what a difference a few days makes.

The Marlins 20-year-old future ace rebounded in a big way on Thursday night, going six innings against the St. Louis Cardinals. He surrendered just one run on three hits with two walks. He struck out seven.

Unfortunately, the Marlins lost, 3-0, and Perez fell to 5-3. His ERA is a very impressive 2.36 on the year.

Even in the loss, Perez made some baseball history.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Eury Pérez has gone 5+ innings and allowed 1 or 0 runs in 8 of his first 11 career starts

that’s the MOST SUCH OUTINGS of any pitcher in his first 11 career appearances, among pitchers to debut since at least 1901

One of the top prospects in baseball, Perez's inclusion in the rotation has been a major reason why the Marlins have been able to put together one of the most surprising seasons in baseball. Miami is 51-38 and in second place in the National League East. They also currently hold the top spot in the wild card race, ahead of both the Dodgers and Phillies.

Miami will finish out the first half of the season with a very important series against those Phillies. First pitch on Friday night is 6:40 p.m.

Zack Wheeler (7-4, 4.03 ERA) will pitch against reigning Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara (3-7, 4.93 ERA) in the opener.
