Powerful Minnesota Twins Rookie Sets Multiple New Marks in Record Books on Friday
The Minnesota Twins rolled the Chicago White Sox on Friday night 10-2 in Chicago, moving to 78-70 on the year.
While the Twins scored 10 runs, the biggest four of the night came on one swing of the bat from rookie Royce Lewis.
The 24-year-old designated hitter hit a grand slam in the second inning which got the scoring started. It was his 14th home run of the season despite limited at-bats, as he missed a large portion of the season with injury.
The grand slam made history on multiple fronts.
First, per ESPN Stats & Info:
Royce Lewis records his 5th grand slam in his 66th career game, the fewest games needed in MLB history.
The only other player to hit 5 grand slams before their 150th career game was Rudy York (139).
It also made team history:
Per Dustin Morse of the Twins:
Royce Lewis now has 4 grand slams this season - a new #MNTwins single-season record!
Only 4 players in @MLB history have hit more in one season:
Hafner - 6 in 2006
Mattingly - 6 in 1987
Pujols - 5 in 2009
Sexson - 5 in 2006
The last rookie to hit 4 was Alexei Ramirez in 2008
Lewis is now hitting .302 overall with the 14 home runs and 50 RBI. He has just 202 at-bats. He's added a slugging percentage of .910.
The Twins and White Sox will play again on Saturday night. First pitch from Guaranteed Rate Field is set for 7:10 p.m. ET.
