Minnesota Twins' Rookie Does Something That's Never Happened Before This Week
Minnesota Twins rookie Royce Lewis made baseball history this week, becoming the first rookie ever to hit grand slams in back-to-back games.
Per @OptaSTATS on social media:
Royce Lewis of the @Twins is the first rookie in MLB history to hit a grand slam in back-to-back games.
Lewis hit a grand slam on Sunday in a win against the Texas Rangers while also hitting one on Monday against the Cleveland Guardians.
The streak ended on Tuesday against Cleveland, as Lewis went 1-for-4 with a solo homer, not a grand slam.
The former top prospect has just 146 at-bats at the major league level this season but is hitting .315 with a .897 OPS. He's got nine home runs and 29 RBI to go along with two stolen bases.
He made his major league debut in 2022, playing in 12 games.
The Twins are 69-64 on the season and are barreling towards an American League Central crown. They lead the Guardians by six games entering play on Wednesday.
The American League Central is one of the most mediocre divisions in baseball history, with three teams at least 14 games under .500, and four of the five teams under .500 overall. Even Cleveland is 63-70.
The two teams will wrap up their series on Wednesday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. ET. Rookie Tanner Bibee (CLE) goes up against veteran righty Sonny Gray (MIN).
Bibbe is 10-3 this season with a 3.01 ERA while Gray is 7-6 with a 3.06 ERA.
The Twins will be off on Thursday.
