Multiple Historic Things Happened in Wednesday's San Francisco Giants Win Over Oakland Athletics

The San Francisco Giants beat the Oakland Athletics 8-3 on Wednesday night, creating multiple instances of team history in the process.

The San Francisco Giants beat the cross-town rival Oakland Athletics on Wednesday night 8-3.

It was a big win for the Giants, who picked up a game in the National League West standings on the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Francisco is now 3.0 games out of first place despite having lost six of its last 10.

In addition to being important, the game was also historic:

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

most pinch-hit HR, Giants franchise history:

Willie McCovey: 13

Bobby Hofman: 9

Austin Slater: 8

While the final score ended up being lopsided, the game was 3-3 when Slater came to the plate, so that was a critical home run. And any time you are on a list with Hall of Famer Willie McCovey, you're doing something special.

He's in his seventh year in the big leagues - all with the Giants. He's a career .259 hitter with 38 home runs. This year, he's hitting .298 with five home runs. He's appeared in 44 games this year.

Langs also has the other piece of team history, as the Giants did something on Wednesday they haven't done in more than 40 years.

the Giants are starting 21-year-olds Luis Matos and Marco Luciano today

this is the first time they’ve started 2 players under the age of 22 in the same game since:

5/9/1982 -- Tom O’Malley & Jeff Ransom

Matos went 1-for-3 at the plate while Luciano was 0-for-2.

The Giants will host the Boston Red Sox for a series beginning on Friday.

First pitch is 10:15 p.m. ET.
