This week, the San Francisco Giants hired Bob Melvin as their newest manager. He'll replace Gabe Kapler, who was fired.

Melvin will be managing his fifth Major League team and is set to make some unique baseball history when the season starts in 2024.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

Bob Melvin will be the 1st manager to helm 3 teams in the same division since the split to 3 divisions per league in 1994

[others have done so if we apply current divs retroactively, but he is the 1st to do so while the teams were members of these divisions]

Melvin has spent 20 years as a manager in the big leagues. He began his career with the Seattle Mariners, spending two years at the helm. He then took over the Arizona Diamondbacks for five years before going to Oakland, where he spent 11 accomplished seasons. He spent the last two with the San Diego Padres.

In all, Melvin has been to the playoffs eight different seasons. He took the Padres to the NLCS in 2022 but the team failed to make the playoffs this year despite massive expectations.

As for the team that Melvin is inheriting in San Francisco, they also failed to make the playoffs this year, finishing fourth in the National League West at 79-83. They feature a top flight starting pitcher in Logan Webb and an excellent closer in Camilo Doval, but will need to work on finding consistent offense.

Perhaps after striking out on Aaron Judge and Carlos Correa last offseason, this is the year the Giants are ready to land a big free agent (Shohei Ohtani, anyone??).
