New York Mets' Pete Alonso Makes Citi Field History with Home Run
Another day, another home for New York Mets slugger Pete Alonso.
And with that home run, the burly first baseman joined a special place in Citi Field history.
Per ESPN Stats & Info on Twitter:
Pete Alonso hit his MLB-leading 21st HR this season.
It marked Alonso's 72nd career HR at Citi Field, which breaks a tie with Lucas Duda for the most HR in the ballpark's history (opened in 2009).
It's been a great year on the power front for Alonso, who is certainly making a case to represent the National League team at the All-Star Game in Seattle
His 21 home runs lead baseball while his 47 RBIs are fourth behind Yordan Alvarez, Adolis Garcia and Rafael Devers.
Alonso is also hitting .232 this year with an .865 OPS. For his career, he's a .258 hitter with 167 homers, 427 RBI and 12 steals.
He was a second-round pick in the 2016 draft out of the University of Florida and made his major league debut in 2019.
He's a two-time All-Star selection who won the Rookie of the Year in 2019. He's also received MVP votes in two different seasons and is making the case for some of those this year as well.
At the time of this posting, the Mets trail the Toronto Blue Jays, 6-4, in the top of the eighth inning. Starting pitcher Kodai Senga lasted just 2.2 innings in this one for New York.
If Toronto holds on for the win, they'll move to 33-27 while a loss would drop the Mets to 30-30.
