New York Mets' Pete Alonso Continues to Put Himself in Elite Company with Regards to Franchise Records
The New York Mets beat the Washington Nationals 5-1 on Friday night to run their record to 49-54.
The victory was keyed by solid pitching from Max Scherzer and a two home run night from Mets slugger Pete Alonso.
With the performance, Alonso joined multiple impressive clubs in team history.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com on social media:
this is Pete Alonso’s 17th career multi-HR game, tying Mike Piazza and Carlos Beltrán for 3rd-most in Mets history, behind only:
Darryl Strawberry: 22
David Wright: 21
And for another piece of historical significance, this time from ESPN Stats & Info:
Pete Alonso has 30 home runs in a season for the 4th time in his career. That is tied with Mike Piazza for the most 30-HR seasons in Mets history.
Though Alonso has struggled average-wise this year, it's still impressive to put himself in categories with some of the biggest names in team history. He's hitting .220 this year with the 30 homers and 73 RBI. He's got an .831 OPS through 350 at-bats. Over his last seven games, he's hitting .423.
The former second-round pick out of Florida is a lifetime .255 hitter with 176 homers. That prodigious power has led to him being a two-time Home Run Derby champion.
The Mets will host the Nationals for Game 2 of their series on Saturday night at Citi Field.
First pitch is set for 7:10 p.m. ET as Carlos Carrasco (NYM) pitches against New York native Patrick Corbin.
Carrasco is 3-4 with a 5.82 ERA while Corbin is 6-11 with a 5.01 ERA.
