New York Mets Rookie Pitcher Joins Exclusive Club in Team Record Books on Sunday

While the New York Mets have disappointed this season, rookie pitcher Kodai Senga has lived up to the hype, joining an elite club in team history.

The New York Mets beat the Atlanta Braves on Sunday night 7-6. The Mets used a six-run fifth inning in the victory while also getting another solid performance from Kodai Senga.

The rookie, who the Mets signed out of Japan this offseason, moved to 9-6 on the year after tossing six innings. He allowed four hits and three earned runs while striking out seven.

He now has an ERA of 3.30 and the seven strikeout effort put him in an exclusive class in team history.

Per Matthew Brownstein of the New York Times:

Most 7+ strikeout performances by a #Mets pitcher in his first 22 big league games:

Doc Gooden: 14

Matt Harvey: 13

Nolan Ryan: 12

Jacob deGrom: 11

Kodai Senga: 11

While the Mets have disappointed this season, Senga has not. The 30-year-old has struck out 149 batters in 122.2 innings this year while also posting a 1.29 WHIP.

After trading Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander at the trade deadline, Senga is the ace of the staff for the rest of the season. It remains to be seen what the Mets will do in the offseason, but Senga figures to be a big part of the rotation for years to come.

The Mets are 53-65 this season and will host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday, who have the same record.

First pitch from Citi Field is slated for 7:10 p.m. ET as Carlos Carrasco will pitch for New York. He's 3-6 with a 6.42 ERA this season.

The Pirates have not announced a starter as of this posting.
