New York Mets Duo Does Something Not Done For Team Since 2015
The New York Mets rolled the Arizona Diamondbacks on Thursday by a score of 9-0. That's five consecutive wins for the Mets, who swept first-place Arizona and now sit at 41-46 overall.
While the offense on Thursday was stellar, the pitching was as well. Veteran Carlos Carrasco earned the win, going eight scoreless innings. He allowed just three hits and one walk while striking out four. He's now 3-3 on the season with a 5.16 ERA.
His dominant performance came on the heels of a dominant showing by Kodai Senga on Wednesday night in which he also went eight innings, allowing just one run while striking out 12.
With the dueling great outings, the Mets accomplished something they haven't done since 2015.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Kodai Senga & Carlos Carrasco each went 8 innings in the Mets’ last 2 games this is the first time the Mets have had starters go 8+ IP in back-to-back team games since Aug 2-3, 2015, when Noah Syndergaard + Bartolo Colon did so
Going deep into games is more of a rarity for pitchers these days. In an era of bullpen manipulation, teams tend to just ask starters to go five or six innings and then want to turn it over to a parade of hard-throwing relievers, so this was a nice throwback by New York.
Also, as we head towards the All-Star break, the Mets are putting themselves back on the fringes of the playoff conversation. Entering Friday, they are now 6.5 games back in the National League wild card race.
They'll play the San Diego Padres on Friday at 9:40 p.m. ET.
