New York Mets' Slugger Accomplishes Rare Feat in Subway Series Lore
The New York Mets beat the New York Yankees 9-3 on Tuesday night as they continue to keep their faint playoff hopes alive.
Justin Verlander went six shutout innings in the victory while Francisco Lindor, Jeff McNeil and Pete Alonso each had multi-hit games, the latter of which joined some rare company in Subway Series history.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Pete Alonso is the 6th Mets player to hit 2 HR at Yankee Stadium and the first since José Reyes in 2010.
Alonso and Carlos Delgado in 2008 are the only times a player on the road has 2 HR and 5 RBI in a Subway Series game on either side.
It was a nice continued bounceback for Alonso, who had seen his numbers drop over the last month amid struggles. He's hitting .191 over the last 30 games but is hitting .360 over his last seven.
He's now hitting .218 on the season with 28 homers and 68 RBI. He's added three steals and has posted a .820 OPS.
Lifetime, he's a .255 hitter with 174 homers and 448 RBI. The former second-round pick out of Florida is also a three-time All-Star and a Rookie of the Year winner.
After the win, the Mets are now 47-53 and seven games back in the National League wild card race. With the trade deadline looming, we'll see if the front office looks to invest in this team or instead looks to sell.
The Mets and Yankees play again on Wednesday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
