New York Mets Star Pete Alonso Moves Up Lists in Baseball - and Team - History on Monday Night

New York Mets star Pete Alonso homered twice on Monday, moving him up lists in both baseball - and team - history.

New York Mets star Pete Alonso hit two home runs and accounted for six RBI on Monday night in an 11-2 win over the Chicago Cubs at Citi Field.

The multi-home run effort brought him up lists in both general baseball, and team, history.

Per ESPN Stats & Info:

Pete Alonso (179) passes Ryan Howard (177) for the 4th-most HR through a player’s first 5 seasons in MLB history.

Tonight marks his 18th career multi-HR game, 3rd-most in @Mets history behind only Darryl Strawberry (22) and David Wright (21).

All in all, Alonso went 3-for-4 in the win. He's now hitting .225 for the season with 33 home runs and 83 RBI. For comparison, his 83 RBI actually leads Angels superstar Shohei Ohtani, who has 82. Alonso has only played in 104 games this season after being out with injury for a time earlier in the season, so you have to wonder how his numbers would look if he had been available every game.

The former second-round pick out of the University of Florida is a lifetime .255 hitter. He's a three-time All-Star, a two-time Home Run Derby winner, and a Rookie of the Year winner.

After the win, the Mets are now 51-61. They've lost seven of their last 10 games as they limp to the finish line of a disappointing season that has seen them trade away both Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer.

The loss was critical for the Cubs, who are 2.5 games back in the National League Central race, and 1.0 game back in the wild card race.

The two teams play again on Tuesday at 7:10 p.m. ET.
