New York Mets' Lefty Makes Team History in Impressive Debut

The New York Mets lost to the Detroit Tigers on Monday night, but don't blame Mets' hurler Sean Manaea, who made history in his first career Mets start.

The New York Mets lost to the Detroit Tigers on Monday night, falling 5-0 in extra innings. With the loss, the Mets are now 0-4 on the year. The Tigers are 4-0 after the win. It's the first time that they've accomplished that feat since the 2015 season.

Though the Mets lost again, it was no fault of new Mets' hurler Sean Manaea, who made team history in his debut.

Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com on social media:

longest no-hit bids in Mets debut:

Today Sean Manaea: 5 2/3 IP
4/5/06 Brian Bannister: 5 1/3 IP
9/7/10 Dillon Gee: 5 IP
9/16/74 Randy Sterling: 5 IP

Manaea didn't allow a hit until the bottom of the sixth inning when Andy Ibanez singled to left field. The Tigers eventually scored all five runs in the top of the 10th inning, with the big blast coming via a three-run homer from Carson Kelly.

Manaea signed a two-year contract with the Mets this past offseason and is slated to be a big part of the starting rotation, especially in the wake of an injury to Kodai Senga. Manaea had eight strikeouts in his debut.

Though he failed to throw the no-hitter, he has completed the feat before. He threw one back in 2018 as a member of the Oakland Athletics.

Now in his ninth major league season, he's played with the A's and the San Diego Padres before the Mets. He's 65-56 lifetime with a 4.08 ERA

The Mets and Tigers will play each other again on Tuesday night. First pitch is 7:10 p.m. ET.
