New York Yankees' Anthony Volpe Makes Team History on Wednesday vs. Oakland Athletics
New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe accomplished something on Wednesday that no other Yankees rookie shortstop in history has accomplished, not even Hall of Famer Derek Jeter.
Against the Oakland Athletics, Volpe hit a grand slam. Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Anthony Volpe is the first Yankees rookie to hit a grand slam in a game he played at shortstop. Volpe in MLB career with bases loaded: 3-3, HR, 7 RBI, BB
1) Those numbers were the bases loaded are most impressive. To be batting 1.000 in those situations, even in such a small sample size, is incredible.
2) Yankees rookies have hit grand slams. Yankees shortstops have hit grand slams. But never has it happened in conjunction with each other. I don't care how obscure the stat is, when your franchise has been around for more than 100 years and something happens for the first time, I'm impressed.
Volpe is off to a .206 start for the Yankees and now has four home runs and 13 RBI. He's also added 11 stolen bases while posting a .653 OPS.
At the time of this posting, the Yankees lead the A's 11-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning and are on the way to a sweep of the AL West team.
In addition to Volpe's grand slam, the Yanks have gotten a homer from Harrison Bader, an RBI single from Anthony Rizzo, a homer from DJ LeMahieu and a sacrifice fly from Gleyber Torres.
If the Yankees hold on, they'll move to 21-17 on the season.
