The New York Yankees Joined an Unenviable Club in the All-Time Record Books This Week

On Wednesday night, the New York Yankees made history in the wrong way following a brilliant start by Michael King.

It's been that kind of year for the New York Yankees... Even when something goes right, it doesn't.

The Yankees lost to the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night 6-1 despite getting a brilliant start from pitcher Michael King. King went 7.0 innings, striking out 13 and walking none.

His transition to a starting pitcher has gone quite well as he now has an overall ERA of 2.66.

To have a starting pitcher register that many strikeouts and still lose the game in lopsided fashion? That effort put the Yankees on the wrong side of baseball history.

Per Katie Sharp of Stathead on social media:

Yankees are the 3rd team since 1900 to have their starting pitcher get 13+ K and 0 BB and lose the game by 5+ runs.

The others:

Blue Jays (Robbie Ray) lost 6-1 at White Sox 6/8/2021

Braves (John Smoltz) lost 6-1 vs Mets 4/10/2005

Yup, that kind of year.

King is in his fifth year in the big leagues, all with the Yankees, and owns a 13-16 lifetime record with a 3.37 ERA. With Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole as the only certainties in the 2024 Yankees' rotation, King would seem to have a good chance to continue to make an imprint as a starter.

Despite the historic loss on Wednesday, the Yankees did beat the Blue Jays on Thursday.

New York will start a series with the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Yankee Stadium.

First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET as Brandon Pfaadt (ARI) pitches against Luke Weaver (NYY).
