New York Yankees Drop 7th in a Row, Fall Victim to Worst Losing Streak in 28 Years
The New York Yankees' ongoing skid has reached disastrous levels.
Saturday's game against the Boston Red Sox once again got out of control early, with second baseman Luis Urías hitting a grand slam in the second inning. AL Cy Young favorite Gerrit Cole gave up two more runs in the fourth inning, and he was ultimately chased off the mound with the Yankees down 6-0.
An Aaron Judge home run was the only thing that prevented a shutout, as Boston beat New York 8-1 to go up 2-0 in the weekend series.
The Yankees have now low seven games in a row to drop to 60-63 on the season. With 39 games to go, New York is 15.5 games out of first place in the AL East and 7.5 games out of a Wild Card spot.
According to ESPN Stats & Info, the seven-game losing streak is tied for the Yankees' worst since August 1995, when they dropped eight consecutive contests.
New York has been outscored 34-7 since the start of their series against the Atlanta Braves on Monday. The minus-27 run differential is the Yankees' worst in a five-game span since 2005, per ESPN.
The skid has taken the Yankees below .500 this late in a season for the first time since they lost those eight straight games in 1995. A 26-7 finish helped New York make the playoffs that year, though.
The Yankees have not finished last in the division since 1990, but they are on pace to do so in 2023. The franchise has won five World Series, seven AL pennants and 16 AL East titles in the meantime.
The series finale between New York and Boston is scheduled for Sunday at 1:35 p.m. ET. Another loss for the Yankees would help them match their worst losing streak in 28 years.
The Yankees are 1-7 against the Red Sox this season.
