If Josh Donaldson Doesn't Play Again This Year, He'll Have One of the Craziest Stat Lines Ever Recorded
On Monday, it was reported that New York Yankees third baseman Josh Donaldson is dealing with a calf injury and could miss the entire season.
If he does, the former MVP will have completed one of the more unique seasons in baseball history.
Donaldson currently has 10 home runs on the season, and just four singles. Only eight other players in baseball history have ever had a season with at least 10 homers and 10 or fewer singles, and Donaldson would have by far the fewest number of singles in that group.
Furthermore, three of the other players on the list accomplished their seasons in the pandemic-shortened 2020 season, so there were less games to amass counting stats like that, making Donaldson's season even more rare.
But along that note, Donaldson has only played in 33 games this year because of multiple injuries (calf, hamstring), giving him not much time to accumulate counting stats as well.
While the 37-year-old is hitting just .142 for the Yankees this year, he has had a great career. He's a two-time Silver Slugger, a three-time All-Star and a former MVP.
He's a lifetime .262 hitter who has 276 homers and 1,300 hits in 13 seasons with the Athletics, Blue Jays, Braves, Guardians, Twins and Yankees.
Signed to a four-year, $92 million deal before the 2020 season, Donaldson will become a free agent at the end of the season.
The Yankees are currently 50-45 and in last place in the American League East. They trail in the wild card race by 2.5 games.
