New York Yankees' Gerrit Cole is Only the Third Player in Team History to Put Together This Kind of Season
The New York Yankees beat the Milwaukee Brewers 4-3 in extra innings on Sunday. It was a unique game that saw the Yankees win despite being no-hit through nine innings by a combination of Corbin Burnes and Devin Williams.
The extra-inning affair also meant that Yankees' ace Gerrit Cole didn't factor into the decision despite going 7.0 innings with no runs allowed and nine strikeouts.
Cole now has a 2.79 ERA and is putting together one of the best seasons in team history.
Per Katie Sharp of Stahead:
Gerrit Cole now has 23 starts with 2 runs or fewer allowed this season (the most in MLB).
The only pitchers in Yankees history with more in a season are Ron Guidry (26 in 1978) and Jack Chesbro (28 in 1904).
With the 2.79 ERA and a 13-4 record, Cole could be in line to win the American League Cy Young award this season.
He's struck out 204 batters in 187.0 innings and owns a 1.03 WHIP through his first 30 starts.
Lifetime, Cole is in his 11th year in the major leagues with the Pirates, Astros and Yankees. He's 143-75 with a 3.19 ERA. The 33-year-old is a six-time All-Star who started the game this season for the American League.
The Yankees are currently 71-72 on the season and in last place in the American League East. They start a four-game series with the Boston Red Sox on Monday in what could end up determining who finishes fourth and who finishes last in the division.
First pitch on Monday is 7:15 p.m. ET.
