New York Yankees Rookie Does Something Not Done For More Than 20 Years in Team History
At the time of this posting, the New York Yankees lead the Seattle Mariners, 4-1, in the top of the ninth inning.
Part of the Yankees scoring came from a home run off the bat of rookie Anthony Volpe.
That was his 10th home run of the season and puts him in a very special club in team history.
Per Katie Sharp on Twitter:
Yankee Rookies with 10+ HR and 15+ SB in a season:
Anthony Volpe (2023)
Alfonso Soriano (2001)
Bobby Brown (1980)
Tony Lazzeri (1926)
Sure, the league has made stealing bases a little easier this year because of some rule changes, but it's still very impressive when you see something happen that hasn't happened in more than 20 years. Also, the Yankees have been playing baseball for a very long time (since 1903), so anytime you are one of only five people to accomplish something, that also is very impressive.
Volpe is struggling average-wise in his rookie year, but he does have that power-speed combo. He's hitting just .194 but has added 28 RBI in addition to the 10 homers.
He was a first-round pick for the Yankees in the 2019 draft out of the New Jersey high school ranks.
If the Yankees win this game, they'll move to 41-33 on the season. They are in third place in the American League East. If Seattle loses, they'll fall to 35-37.
The two teams wrap up the series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. ET.
