Oakland Athletics Finally Snap Brutal Streak, But Lose Anyway to Houston Astros
The Oakland Athletics lost to the Houston Astros on Thursday night, 3-1, but despite the loss, they finally broke a dubious mark in baseball this season.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
The A's and Astros had played 54 consecutive innings this season without the A's having the lead until the first inning of tonight's game.
The Astros' 54 consecutive innings without trailing against the A's was the longest for any team against a single opponent this season.
The A's actually held the 1-0 lead until the top of the sixth before surrendering it, but it's just been that kind of year for Oakland.
The A's are now an MLB-worst 27-72 and are on pace to have one of the worst seasons of the 2000s. Throw in the fact that the ownership group wants to move them to Las Vegas in the coming years, and it's been a downright dreadful year for the players and fanbase.
As for the Astros, they are now 54-43 and gearing up for the stretch run. The defending World Series champions are just 4.0 games back in the American League West and are currently tied for the second and third wild card spot with the Toronto Blue Jays.
The two teams will play again on Friday night in Oakland.
First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET as Framber Valdez pitches against JP Sears.
Valdez enters the game at 7-6 with a 2.76 ERA and is in the midst of an All-Star season. Sears is 1-6 with a 3.99 ERA.
