Trea Turner and the Philadelphia Phillies are Making Base Stealing History Right Now
The Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves on Saturday night 3-0 in Game 1 of the National League Division Series.
As a result of the win, the Phillies have taken homefield advantage and also have their pitching set up to their benefit for the rest of the series. They are just two wins away from advancing to the NLCS for the second straight year.
While Bryce Harper's home run and a shutout on the mound will understandably attract attention, the Phillies' running game should not be ignored.
The Phillies stole five bases in the victory, getting steals from Harper, Bryson Stott, Brandon Marsh and two from Trea Turner.
The running prowess made multiple instances of history as well.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
5 SB are the most in a postseason game in Phillies history
it’s the most by any team in a PS game since KC had 7 in 12 innings in the 2014 WC Game
last in a 9-inning game: Angels, 5 in 2007 ALDS G2
Given the rule changes around baseball in 2023 regarding disengagements and bigger bases, it's easier to steal bases than it's ever been, but that's still noteworthy.
Turner's prowess on the bases is also noteworthy:
most consecutive SB, including postseason (since 1st tracked in 1951):
1988-89 Vince Coleman: 50
2006-07 Ichiro Suzuki: 45
2022-23 Trea Turner: 40 *active
2007-08 Jimmy Rollins: 40

Turner is hitting .455 through 11 postseason at-bats this year as well. His first year in Philadelphia, he hit .266 in the regular season with 26 home runs, 76 RBI and 30 steals.
