Philadelphia Phillies' Leadoff Slugger Moves Up Prestigious All-Time List
In game one of a doubleheader on Tuesday against the Washington Nationals, Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber moved up a prestigious list in baseball history.
Schwarber hit two home runs in the Phillies 8-4 victory, which prompted this nugget from MLB.com researcher Sarah Langs.
most career multi-home run games out of leadoff spot:
Mookie Betts: 24
George Springer: 19
Alfonso Soriano: 19
Kyle Schwarber: 14
Brady Anderson: 14
Joc Pederson: 13
Bobby Bonds: 13
Though Schwarber is having a dreadful year from an average perspective, he's continuing to produce in the power department. He's hitting just .183 for the Phillies, but does have a .324 on-base percentage to go along with 30 home runs and 72 RBI.
The 30-year-old is a two-time All-Star and a Silver Slugger award winner. He also helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series and helped the Phillies get to the World Series in 2022.
He's a .226 career hitter with 229 home runs. He's in his ninth year in the big leagues with the Cubs, Nationals, Red Sox and Phillies.
With the win, the Phillies are now 62-52 on the year. They are in second place in the National League East but are focused on the wild card race. They are currently tied with the San Francisco Giants for the top spot in that race.
The Phillies and Nationals will play again on Wednesday night. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET as MacKenzie Gore (WAS) pitches against Michael Lorenzen for the Phillies.
Gore is 6-8 with a 4.34 ERA while Lorenzen is 6-7 with a 3.48.
