Philadelphia Phillies' Kyle Schwarber Joins Rare Club in Team History
Philadelphia Phillies slugger Kyle Schwarber joined a rare club in team history on Tuesday night.
The Phillies beat the Tigers, 1-0, and the only run was scored via a leadoff homer by Schwarber.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Kyle Schwarber's leadoff HR in the 1st inning was the Phillies' only run in a 1-0 win over the Tigers Tuesday. It's the 3rd time in Phils history that a leadoff homer has represented their only run in a 1-0 win (most recent before Tuesday: Jimmy Rollins in 2012 vs Marlins)
Schwarber went 1-3 on the night with the homer. He's got 16 homers and 34 RBIs this year but it's been a struggle otherwise for last year's home run champ. He's hitting just .173 on the year.
In addition to Schwarber's heroics, the Phillies got a great start from Taijuan Walker. He went seven innings, allowing two hits and striking out eight.
The Phillies are one of the most disappointing teams in baseball this year at 29-32 but after having won four straight, maybe this is the start of a turnaround for last year's National League champions. They are currently in fourth place in the National League East and are 7.5 games out of first place. They are 3.5 games out of a wild card berth currently.
The Phillies and Tigers will play again on Wednesday night at 6:05 p.m. ET as Zack Wheeler takes the ball against Reese Olson. It will be just the second appearance of the year for the 23-year-old, who is 0-1.
Wheeler is 4-4 with a 4.33 ERA.
