Philadelphia Phillies Home Run Hitter Passes Hall of Famer in Team Record Books
The Philadelphia Phillies lost to the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday 6-5 but slugger Kyle Schwarber made team history in the weekend series.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Kyle Schwarber has 90 HR combined in his first two seasons with the Phillies.
That passes Jim Thome (89 from 2003-04) for the most by a player in their first 2 seasons with the team in Phillies history.
Schwarber hit that record-breaking home run on Saturday against St. Louis. It was a three-run shot.
The bopper is having an odd statistical year. He's hitting for a poor average (.197) but has been remarkably productive with the 44 homers and 97 RBI. He's got an OPS of .820 and has helped solidify the top of the Phillies order.
In the wake of losing Rhys Hoskins to injury and Bryce Haper missing nearly the first two months of the season, Schwarber has been there to provide much-needed power.
For his career, the 30-year-old is a .227 hitter with 243 homers and 541 RBI. While it's unlikely, a late-season run could allow Schwarber to hit the milestone 250 home run mark.
The Phillies enter play on Monday at 81-68 and in the first wild card spot in the National League. They lead the Arizona Diamondbacks by 3.0 games for that spot. The other two spots are up for grabs between the Diamondbacks, Cubs, Reds and Giants.
The Phillies will be back in action on Monday night against the Braves. First pitch from Truist Park is set for 7:20 p.m. ET.
