Philadelphia Phillies Make National League History in NLCS Game 1 Victory
The Philadelphia Phillies defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks on Monday night 5-3 in Game 1 of the NLCS at Citizens Bank Park.
The Phillies are now just three wins away from a second consecutive trip to the World Series. They are seeking their first title since 2008.
In the win, the Phillies used the long ball, getting home runs from Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Nick Castellanos. They also got a strong 6.0 inning pitching performance from righty Zack Wheeler, who struck out eight against just two earned runs.
With the win, the Phillies have made some National League history.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
The Phillies have now won 10 straight home postseason games against NL opponents dating back to last season.
That passes the 2004-05 Cardinals for the most consecutive home playoff victories against a team's own league in MLB history.
In this postseason alone, the Phillies defeated the Marlins twice, the Braves twice and the Diamondbacks once.
The Phillies' success this year continues a great string of play for Philadelphia sports teams. The Phillies got to the World Series a year ago while the Philadelphia Eagles got to the Super Bowl. The 76ers of the NBA also got to the second round of the Eastern Conference Finals.
The Phillies will have another chance to add to their home resume on Tuesday night for Game 2.
First pitch is set for 8:07 p.m. ET as Aaron Nola (PHI) pitches against Merrill Kelly.
Nola is 2-0 with a 1.42 ERA this postseason. Kelly is 1-0 with a 0.00.
