Philadelphia Phillies' Right-Hander Joins Small Group in Baseball History
The Philadelphia Phillies beat the New York Mets 5-2 on Sunday afternoon at Citizens Bank Park.
The win moved the Phillies to 87-69 and they continue to hold the top spot in the National League wild card race.
Nick Castellanos provided the thump offensively, hitting a two-run homer and Christopher Sanchez threw a 7.0-inning gem on the mound.
In addition, trade deadline acquisition Michael Lorenzen recorded the save. With that save, he joined a small list in baseball history.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Michael Lorenzen is the 10th pitcher to throw an individual no-hitter + record a save in the same season (since saves became official in 1969), h/t @EliasSports)
he joins:
2014 Tim Lincecum
2010 Matt Garza
1993 Chris Bosio
1980 Jerry Reuss
1976 John Candelaria
1973 Nolan Ryan
1973 Jim Bibby
1973 Phil Niekro
1969 Bob Moose
Lorenzen threw a no-hitter in his first home start after being acquired by the Phillies from the Detroit Tigers and as the season has worn on, the team has talked about using him out of the bullpen. He figures to be there in the playoffs where he can be a weapon for the Phils, who are looking to get back to the World Series for the second straight year.
Lorenzen is 9-9 this season with a 4.26 ERA in 27 games. He's struck out 108 batters in 150.0 innings.
In his ninth season, he's 40-38 overall with a 4.13 ERA.
The Phillies will be off on Monday but will be back in action on Tuesday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
