Blake Snell and Bob Melvin Will Have a Small Slice of Baseball History with San Francisco Giants
On Monday night, the nightmarish offseason for pitcher Blake Snell finally ended as he signed a two-year deal with the San Francisco Giants.
The reigning National League Cy Young winner will reconvene with his old manager Bob Melvin, who he just had last year in San Diego. When they do, they'll have a small slice of baseball history under their belt as well, according to Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
Blake Snell Bob Melvin Snell will be the 17th pitcher to start a game for the same manager in consecutive years with a different team in the divisional era (1969) and 6th since 1999, joining (h/t @EliasSports):
Sean Manaea/Bob Melvin 2021 OAK, 2022 SD
Drew Smyly/Gabe Kapler 2019 PHI, 2020 SF
Mark Buehrle/Ozzie Guillen 2011 CHW, 2012 MIA
Carl Pavano/Jeff Torborg 2001 MON, 2002 FLA
Hideo Nomo/Phil Garner 1999 MIL, 2000 DET
It's unclear exactly when Snell could be ready for game action in San Francisco and he likely will require some minor league starts to get prepared, but when he joins the Giants, he will go a long way towards making them contenders in the National League West.
Snell went 14-9 last year with a 2.25 ERA to win the Cy Young, which was the second of his career. He struck out a whopping 234 batters in 180.0 innings.
Lifetime, he's 71-55 with a 3.20 ERA. He's played in eight major league seasons with the Tampa Bay Rays and Padres. He helped the Rays get to the 2020 World Series and also won the Cy Young in 2018, going 21-5 with a 1.89 ERA.
