San Diego Padres' Blake Snell and Gary Sanchez Have Insane Stats Together
The San Diego Padres beat the New York Mets on Saturday night, 3-1.
With the win, the Padres moved to 42-47 on the season while the loss dropped the Mets to the same record. Both teams are 6.5 games out of the wild card chase in the National League at this point.
The Padres were propelled to victory by another dominant start from left-hander Blake Snell. The former Cy Young winner went six innings and allowed just one hit, no runs and three walks. He struck out 11 in moving to 6-7 on the year. He also lowered his ERA to 2.85.
While Snell's overall season is impressive, it's also impressive what he's accomplished with Gary Sanchez behind the plate as his catcher.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
Lowest ERA over an MLB pitcher's first 8 career starts with a specific starting catcher (since ERA became official in 1913):
0.47 - Nolan Ryan with Mark Bailey (1984 Astros)
0.47 - Ervin Santana with Jason Castro (2017 Twins)
0.56 - Blake Snell with Gary Sánchez (2023 @Padres)
Sanchez started the season without a team after playing for the Dominican Republic in the World Baseball Classic. He then signed a minor league deal with the Giants, opted out and played a few games with the Mets before landing with the Padres.
In addition to his defense, he's provided some punch offensively as well. While hitting just .195 overall, he's got seven homer and 21 RBI.
The Mets and Padres will finish out the first half on Sunday at 4:10 p.m. ET.
