The San Diego Padres lost to the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night by a score of 2-0.

Mariners pitcher Logan Gilbert delivered a 7.0-inning gem that went down in team history in the win. We covered that here. But as part of that gem, there was negative history made for Padres star Juan Soto.

Per @MarinerMuse on social media:

Folks, that is Juan Soto’s first career golden sombrero.

Yup, it was a four-strikeout game for Soto, who has had an overall excellent year. As an aside, Gilbert is also the first right-handed pitcher to ever strike Soto out three times in a single game. His fourth strikeout came in the ninth against closer Andres Munoz.

The 24-year-old Soto is hitting .273 this year while posting a robust .416 on-base percentage. He's got 24 homers, 72 RBI and has registered six stolen bases.

At just 24, Soto is already an incredibly accomplished player, having won a batting title, a World Series title (2019), three Silver Slugger awards, and a Home Run Derby title. He's also a three-time All-Star.

The loss was a critical one for the Padres, who are holding onto faint hopes of making the playoffs in the National League as a wild card. San Diego is 55-59 and 4.0 games back in the race for that final spot.

The Mariners and Padres will play again on Wednesday night in Seattle. First pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET as Padres veteran Yu Darvish starts. The Mariners are likely to start rookie Emerson Hancock, who will be making his major league debut.
