San Francisco Giants Do Something For First Time in Nearly 30 Years in Wild Comeback vs. Los Angeles Angels
On the scoreboard, the San Francisco Giants 8-3 win over the Los Angeles Angels looks like a blowout.
But the game was much closer than that score indicates and required a historic comeback effort by San Francisco, as the Giants did something they haven't done in nearly 30 years.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
The Giants won by 5 runs after entering the 9th inning trailing. It’s the first time they’ve done that in a game since May 29, 1995 at the Montreal Expos.
The Giants scored six runs in the ninth inning after trailing 3-2 entering the frame.
Against Angels All-Star closer Carlos Estevez, the visitors got five earned runs, and then they added another run against Aaron Loup.
In that ninth, Patrick Bailey had a two-run double, Mark Mathias had a two-RBI single, Thairo Estrada had an RBI single, as did Blake Sabol.
The game was critical to both teams and their playoff hopes. The Giants are now 62-51 and they lead the chase for the National League wild card's top spot. They have a 0.5 game lead on the Philadelphia Phillies for that spot.
As for the Angels, they have yet to win since the trade deadline. After going all-in to try to make the playoffs - and to impress Shohei Ohtani - they have lost seven straight games. They are now 8.0 games back in the chase for the last wild card sport in the American League.
The two teams will play again on Tuesday night.
First pitch is 9:38 p.m. ET.
