Seattle Mariners on Pace to Make Baseball History and Do Something That Hasn't Happened in Nearly 80 Years

The Seattle Mariners' pitching staff could do something not done since 1944 when it comes to this very important category.

The Seattle Mariners hit the off-day on Thursday in a tie for first place in the American League West. Sitting at 76-57, the M's are tied with the Houston Astros and are seeking their first division crown since 2001.

The main driver of the Mariners success this year has been their starting pitching. While the offense has taken off in August, the starters have been consistent all year, even in the absence of Marco Gonzales and Robbie Ray, who are both out for the year with injury.

In fact, the M's pitching staff is on pace for some baseball history that hasn't been done in nearly 80 years, per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:

so @SteveGelbs noted the Mariners currently have 3 of top 5 in MLB in WHIP + last team to finish with 3 of T5 was 1944 Reds (!!) here's the list for that note! teams with 3 of top 5 among qualified SP in MLB in WHIP, since 1900:

1944 CIN

1940 CIN

1925 CIN

1901 PIT

1903 CLE

Luis Castillo leads MLB in WHIP with a 1.00 while George Kirby is second at 1.03. Logan Gilbert is fifth at 1.05.

If the Mariners are going to win the historically-competitive AL West, they will need the starters to continue to dominate. The M's have a difficult final month of the season ahead as they take on playoff contenders like the Reds and Dodgers, while also finishing the year with their last 10 games against the Rangers and Astros.

The M's will visit the Mets on Friday night.
