Seattle Mariners Do Something Not Done in Baseball in More Than 15 Years in Baseball History
Wednesday night was a great night for the Seattle Mariners. The Mariners assured themselves of a series win over the Miami Marlins by getting a 9-3 win, saw starting pitcher George Kirby strike out a career-high 10 batters, and saw Cal Raleigh bust out of a slump with a three-run homer.
In addition, the M's offense made some unique baseball history, doing something that hadn't been done for more than 15 years.
Per Inside Edge on Twitter:
The Mariners scored NINE runs despite getting no hits from their top four. That is the MOST runs since 2007 given the parameters. In fact only one other team, the Athletics, scored more than six runs (vs. Marlins June 20, 2008). (2/3)
What makes that even more impressive is that the bottom of the order was able to pick up the slack in that manner. The Mariners offense has largely been top-heavy this year, so for the bottom half to do all the damage was a deviation.
Jarred Kelenic went 1-3 with a walk out of the five spot, while Eugenio Suarez went 1-3 with a walk out of the six spot. Raleigh went 1-3 with the three-run homer in the seven spot while Mike Ford went 3-4 with two homers and three RBI in the eight spot. Finally, Jose Caballero went 2-3 with three RBIs and a double out of the number nine spot.
The Mariners got back to .500 with the win (33-33) and will go for the sweep on Wednesday. These two teams play again at 9:40 p.m. ET.
