Seattle Mariners Reach Franchise Milestone in Sunday Win Over Detroit Tigers
The Seattle Mariners beat the Detroit Tigers on Sunday afternoon, 2-0, as they salvaged game three of a three-game set.
The win was vitally important as the Mariners avoided the sweep and kept themselves relevant in the current American League playoff picture. They are 5.0 games back of the final spot at this point.
Cal Raleigh hit a solo home run while Bryce Miller and four relievers combined on a shutout to pace the victory.
The win was also the team's 1,000th career win at T-Mobile Park, which was previously known as Safeco Field.
Not a bad week for the ballpark, huh? Host the All-Star Game and all its festivities and get the 1,000th win.
The ballpark opened in the middle of the 1999 season and has seen several great players and memories come through it.
Safeco was home to Ken Griffey Jr. in 1999 before he was traded to the Cincinnati Reds and home to Alex Rodriguez before he signed with the Rangers in 2001. It also saw the Mariners win a league-record 116 games in 2001 and break the playoff drought in 2022.
It's seen Ichiro play the best years of his career there, winning MVP and Rookie of the Year in 2001, and it's seen Felix Hernandez throw a perfect game back in 2012.
The Mariners will need a few more wins at T-Mobile Park this year if they want to make the playoffs. It will be an uphill climb but they'll have another chance to gain ground on Monday when they host the Minnesota Twins.
