Seattle Mariners Reliever Joins Small Group in Team History on Wednesday

Seattle Mariners reliever Matt Brash became just the fifth reliever in team history to register 100 strikeouts in a season.

The Seattle Mariners beat the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday afternoon 3-2. It was a massive win for Seattle, which won the series and kept pace in the American League playoff race.

The M's are 1.5 games behind the Houston Astros in the American League West and they are up by 1.0 games over the Toronto Blue Jays for the third and final wild card spot in the American League.

While the win was the most important thing, the M's also got some cool history out of relief pitcher Matt Brash.

Per @MarinersPR:

Matt Brash is the 5th @Mariners reliever with 100+ strikeouts in a season, joining Bill Caudill (1982), J.J. Putz (2006), Edwin Díaz (2018) & Paul Sewald (2021).

Brash, who started out the 2022 season as a starter before transitioning to the bullpen, has become an electric weapon for the M's as a reliever.

Armed with a triple-digit fastball and a wipeout slider, he's accumulated his 100 strikeouts in 63.0 innings. He does have a propensity to walk people, as he has walked 26 batters and hit five, but he remains very tough to actually hit.

He's now appeared in 71 games this season, which leads all relievers.

Brash was originally drafted by the San Diego Padres but came to the Mariners in the 2020 season as part of a trade that sent reliever Taylor Williams to San Diego.

The Mariners are 81-65 this year and will start a critical series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night.
