The Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 7-2 on Tuesday night in Oakland.

It was a huge win for the Mariners, who kept pace in the American League playoff race. At 83-68, they are tied with the Texas Rangers for the third and final wild card spot in the American League. They are 1.0 game behind the Toronto Blue Jays, who hold the second spot.

The M's are looking for their second playoff berth in as many years and the second since 2001.

Starting pitcher Luis Castillo was huge on Tuesday, going 7.0 innings and allowing just two runs. He walked three and struck out eight. With the win, he moved to 14-7 on the year with a 3.06 ERA. After making the American League All-Star Game this year, he's likely to also receive some Cy Young votes.

The eight strikeout effort also put him in an elite club in team history.

Per @MarinersPR:

Luis Castillo is the 8th pitcher in @Mariners history to record 200+ strikeouts in a season.

Castillo is the 3rd right-handed pitcher to do it, joining Erik Hanson (1990) & Félix Hernández (6x, 2009-14).

Castillo has been everything the Mariners could want when they acquired him at the trade deadline in 2022 for an extreme prospect package.

The 30-year-old is 62-62 lifetime with a 3.49 ERA. He's in his seventh big league season with the Reds and Mariners.

Seattle will go for a sweep in Oakland and look to maintain their playoff possibilities on Wednesday.

First pitch is set for 3:37 p.m. ET.
