Seattle Mariners' Cade Marlowe Spurs Comeback Win By Doing Something Team Hasn't Seen in Nearly 20 Years
The Seattle Mariners came from behind on Thursday to shock the Los Angeles Angels by a score of 5-3.
The M's trailed the game 3-1 entering the top of the ninth inning but rookie Cade Marlowe hit a grand slam to right field off Angels closer Carlos Estevez to propel them to victory.
The shot was Marlowe's second of the season and put him in a rare class in Mariners team history.
Per @MarinersPR on social media:
Cade Marlowe: first @Mariners player with a go-ahead grand slam in the 9th inning (or later) with his team trailing since Richie Sexson on Sept. 19, 2005 at Toronto.
Marlowe has helped keep the Mariners afloat over the last two weeks. His overall athleticism has helped minimize the loss of Jarred Kelenic, who broke his foot and is out until September.
He's been part of a nice stretch for the Mariners, who have gotten themselves back into playoff contention. They've won seven of their last 10 games, are 57-52 on the year, and are now just 2.5 games back in the American League wild card picture.
Since being called up, Marlowe is hitting .333 over 30 at-bats. He's got two home runs, six RBI and two stolen bases.
The Angels are now 56-54 after the loss and are 4.0 games back of the wild card in the American League.
The two teams will play again on Friday night. First pitch from Angel Stadium is set for 9:38 p.m. ET as Luis Castillo (SEA) pitches against Reid Detmers (LAA).
