Soon-to-Be Hall of Famer Fred McGriff Part of Trade Deadline Miracle
This weekend in Cooperstown, N.Y., former Major League Baseball star Fred McGriff is set to be inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
McGriff will join former third baseman Scott Rolen as part of this year's prestigious class, and while you'll hear several stories about their greatness and read all of their stats, one thing you should appreciate about McGriff is the impact that he had on the Atlanta Braves.
In the spirit of trade deadline season, MLB Insider Jon Morosi tweeted the following:
In Cooperstown, a Trade Deadline thought: GMs dream of making a move as impactful as the trade the @Braves made 30 years ago this month.
The Braves went 51-17 after Fred McGriff joined the lineup — and won the NL West by 1 game. @MLBNetwork @baseballhall @MLB
That's certainly an incredible impact for McGriff and is the kind of stuff that trade deadline legends are made of.
All in all, McGriff spent 19 years in the big leagues with the Blue Jays, Padres, Braves, Rays, Cubs, and Dodgers.
He was a five-time All-Star and a three-time Silver Slugger winner who hit 493 career homers and had a lifetime batting average of .284.
He also helped the Braves win the World Series in 1995, but not the 1993 season in which he was acquired. That year, they lost to the Philadelphia Phillies in the NLCS.
They beat the Cleveland franchise in the 1995 season.
