St. Louis Cardinals Rookie Did Something Not Done in Nearly 70 Years on Thursday
The rebuilding St. Louis Cardinals lost to the Minnesota Twins on Thursday night by a score of 5-3. The Cardinals, one year after winning the National League Central, are in last place in the division and just finished a tear down of their roster at the trade deadline.
With that said, the only thing really to look at the rest of the way for St. Louis is development of young players, including top prospect Jordan Walker. He went 0-for-4 on Thursday but made some unique team history, doing something the franchise hasn't seen since 1958.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
21-year-old Jordan Walker is hitting 3rd tonight, the highest in his young career he's hit in the lineup.
Walker is the youngest Cardinals player to hit in the 3-hole since Curt Flood in 1958.
It's hard to come up at that age and make an impact and Walker is certainly doing so. He's hitting .265 this season across 245 at-bats. He broke camp with the team, was sent down, and has stayed up ever since. He's got 10 homers and 29 RBI on the season to go along with five stolen bases.
St. Louis is 48-62 on the season and will host the Colorado Rockies on Friday night at Busch Stadium.
Rockies righty Chris Flexen will pitch against longtime Cardinal Adam Wainwright.
Flexen is 0-5 with a 8.08 ERA while Wainwright is 3-5 with a 7.18 ERA.
First pitch is set for 8:15 p.m. ET. Colorado enters the matchup at 42-66 overall.
