Superstar Shohei Ohtani Continues to Top Himself as He Passes His Own Record in Team Record Books
After Thursday's historic doubleheader performance against the Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels star Shohei Ohtani is the talk of baseball.
Ohtani threw a complete game shutout against Detroit in Game 1 of the doubleheader - and then hit two home runs in Game 2. He's got a league-leading 38 homers now.
In addition to carrying the Angels to two much-needed wins, Ohtani also made some team history by passing himself in the record books.
Per ESPN Stats & Info:
Shohei Ohtani has 38 HR this season, the most by an Angels player before August in franchise history.
He passed himself from 2021 when he entered August with 37 HR.
Ohtani won the MVP award in that 2021 season and appears well on his way to winning another this year.
At the plate, he's hitting a ridiculous .298 with the 38 homers and 80 RBI. He's got 12 stolen bases and is carrying a 1.070 OPS.
He's also doing this in the wake of not having Mike Trout anymore as lineup protection. Trout is working his way back from a broken hamate bone and has been out since early July.
Lifetime at the plate, Ohtani is a .272 hitter with 165 homers.
After his dominant performance on the mound, Ohtani is now 9-5 with a 3.43 ERA. He's struck out 156 batters in 120.2 innings.
Ohtani will become a free agent at the end of the season and is going to land the biggest contract in baseball history, but first, he's trying to help the Angels make the playoffs for the first time since 2014.
They are 3.0 games back of the final wild card spot.
