Evan Carter Re-writes the Baseball Record Books in World Series Game 1 Victory
The Texas Rangers beat the Arizona Diamondbacks in Game 1 of the World Series on Friday night. The Rangers won 6-5 thanks to a game-tying home run by Corey Seager in the ninth inning and a game-winning home run by Adolis Garcia in the bottom of the 11th.
While those two will deservedly get plenty of praise for their efforts, Rangers' rookie Evan Carter deserves his praise as well. The rookie, who was just called up to the big leagues in early September, made multiple instances of baseball history.
Per Sarah Langs of MLB.com:
at 21 years & 59 days, Evan Carter is the 3rd-youngest player with multiple extra-base hits in a World Series game, older than only:
1996 Andruw Jones: 19 y, 180 d
2019 Juan Soto: 20 y, 362 d
And this, from Jayson Stark of 'The Athletic:'
Drove in the first run of a World Series at 21 or younger:
Andruw Jones in 1996 (at 19!)
Ty Cobb in 1908 (21 years, 297 days)
Jimmie Foxx in 1929 21 years, 351 days)
Evan Carter tonight 21 years, 59 days)
What a list!
The 21-year-old, who is now hitting third in the Rangers order, went 2-for-6 in the game. He's now hitting .311 this postseason with a homer and six RBI.
Because he hasn't played enough regular season games yet to lose his prospect eligibility, he is still the No. 1 prospect in the organization, per MLB.com.
The following comes from his MLB.com prospect profile:
The Rangers' 2022 Minor League player of the year, Carter stands out most for his advanced approach at the plate, where he recognizes pitches and controls the strike zone well beyond his years and uses the entire field. He makes consistent contact with a clean left-handed swing, and his bat speed and the leverage in his lanky 6-foot-2 frame should lead to at least average power once he adds some needed strength and pulls pitches more frequently. He completes his offensive package with plus speed and the savvy to use it well on the bases.
He hit .306 in 62 regular season at-bats.
Game 2 of the World Series is set for Saturday night at 8:03 p.m. ET.
