The Dodgers Own the Angels in a Way We Haven't Seen in More Than 80 Years
The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Los Angeles Angels in a mini two-game series this weekend, extending a historic run of dominance over their cross-town rivals.
Per @OptaSTATS on Twitter:
The @Dodgers have won 10 straight games against the Angels. The only longer win streak by a team against an opponent from the same metro area in MLB history is 12 games by the New York Giants against the Brooklyn Dodgers (1937-1938).
Now, we love history here at Fastball and FanNation, but this is obviously a niche stat.
1) There simply aren't many cross-town teams, so there's not many chances to have a streak like this. The Cubs and White Sox, Yankees and Mets, and Dodgers and Angels are the only teams that fit this criteria.
2) Each of these cross-town rival teams feature one team from the American League and one from the National League. We didn't get interleague play until the mid-1990s so we simply haven't had a long time to accumulate statistics like this.
But with the balanced schedule now in play, we will have more chances to see if teams can have dominant stretches over one another.
The Dodgers head into the break 51-38. At the time of this posting, they are 0.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks in the National League West. They are a 0.5 games behind the Marlins for the top wild card spot.
The Angels limped into the break, going 1-9 in their last 10. They are 45-46 and 7.0 games back of the Texas Rangers in the American League West.
