Toronto Blue Jays' Kevin Gausman Continues to Make Team History on the Mound
Another day, another great start for Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Kevin Gausman.
One day after the Houston Astros got to Alek Manoah for six runs in 0.1 innings, Gausman tamed the world champs, going seven innings while surrendering just one run on four hits. He walked none and struck out a whopping 13.
With the win, Gausman is now 5-3 on the year and he lowered his ERA to 2.63.
He also continued to separate himself in team history in the 5-1 win.
Most strikeouts through first 13 starts of a #BlueJays season:
1) @KevinGausman - 113 (2023)
2) Ray - 97 (2021)
3) Burnett - 96 (2007)
Pretty impressive considering that Robbie Ray won the Cy Young Award for the Jays that season. Gausman has now struck out 113 in just 82 innings. He is now tied for the most strikeouts in baseball with Spencer Strider.
For his career, he's 81-85 with a 3.86 ERA.
The 32-year-old is in his second year as a member of the Blue Jays and was a major reason of why Toronto made the playoffs in the 2022 season. He made his major league debut in 2013 with the Orioles and spent parts of six seasons in Baltimore. He then pitched in Atlanta for parts of two years, Cincinnati for part of one, San Francisco for two years and now Toronto. He made the All-Star team in 2021 with the Giants.
He won a career-high 14 games that season and has four different seasons with double-digit wins.
The Blue Jays and Astros will play again on Wednesday at 7:07 p.m. ET.
