Toronto Blue Jays' 3B Does Something Rarely Done in Franchise History on Sunday
The Toronto Blue Jays beat the Boston Red Sox 3-2 on Sunday afternoon. The win moved the Jays to 83-67 and into the second wild card position in the American League.
They are 0.5 games ahead of the Texas Rangers for that spot and 1.5 ahead of the Seattle Mariners, who are the first team on the outside-looking-in.
Matt Chapman provided the theatre on Sunday, hitting a walk-off triple in the bottom of the ninth inning.
That hit joined a rare club in team history as well. Per @StatsCentre:
Players to record a walk-off triple with the @BlueJays franchise:
Matt Chapman (Earlier today in a 3-2 win that capped a series sweep of the Red Sox)
Juan Beniquez (September 26, 1987 vs the Tigers)
Garth Iorg (September 4, 1980 vs the White Sox and April 19, 1984 vs the Orioles)
Chapman recently returned from the injury list and gives Toronto another veteran presence in its lineup. The 30-year-old is now hitting .246 with 15 homers, 51 RBI and three stolen bases. He's registered an OPS of .764.
In his second year with Toronto, he's a seven-year veteran in total. He's a lifetime .241 hitter in his career with the Jays and the Oakland Athletics.
The Jays are off on Monday night but will be sure to be scoreboard watching the Mariners-Athletics and Rangers-Red Sox games. They will be back in action on Tuesday night when they travel to New York to take on the Yankees.
First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
